Active Moms – A Calendar for Moms on the Go

A friend of mine turned me on to the Active Moms Calendar. There are over 900 events each month for moms and families in Phoenix, Arizona! What I like the most about this calendar is, unlike other events calendars in the area, it’s truly foced on women in Phoenix. If you have time, check it out for everything that’s new in the valley. You will find events such as business activities, sports, entertainment, and so much more for kids.

While this website is currently new and under construction, I suspect they will soon have a full featured calendar application. They already have a blog and a way to subscribe to updates. There is a good variety of activities available for moms and kids.

Staying Busy

Keeping busy here in Phoenix, Arizona. Work, work, work. Parenting. Meetings. Events. Not much time for shopping or traveling recently, and maybe less in the months to come. But it’s nice to have a job right now, and have the opportunity to stay busy. If there’s one thing I like less than anything else it’s sitting at home with nothing to do. Managing a personal life with a career is tough but rewarding when I reach my goals. The only thing that you will *really* miss as a small business owner and mother is time with friends and time for yourself.

Arizona Weather, Winding Down and Here Comes Fall!

Here comes the best time of the year. Watch out! Fall is absolute bliss in Arizona. I am looking forward to the weekends of cool weather. Sure, the pool was nice, but really I’ve had it with the heat. The kids need time to get outside as well and it will be amazing to take the kids to the park on a weekend day without slides that are so hot they burn your hands. About the only thing crummy about Fall in Arizona is the lack of colored leaves falling from the trees. If you don’t live here, you can have that, in exchange for my two and a half months of beautiful 80 degree weather. Besides, there’s always Flagstaff.

Fashion, Arizona, and Kohls

Our office is right next door to a Kohls Department Store, and recent financial news about Kohls that I’ve read comes as not surprise to me. Kohls recently posted surprising profits, surpassing estimates. Who couldn’t have seen that coming? Every day when I am driving off to a business meeting I pass by Kohls. For several years now, no matter the time of day, there has been no shortage of women walking in and out of this store! You can look around and see other shopping centers completely devoid of life, but there is always someone coming or going in that Kohls center!

I remember a time not too long ago when most of the women had the idea that fashion wasn’t so much about how you looked. What was important was how much you spent. While I have never personally agreed with that sentiment, it is interesting to see how times have changed. This Kohls is in a high-end part of town, people certainly aren’t hurting for cash around here, yet they continue to flock there in droves.

Is it just a sign of the times when a discount department store becomes the new face of American fashion? Or is this more than just a trend? It will be interesting to see what happens with stores like Kohls once the economy recovers and choices of style are no longer dominated by price. And on a side note, an even more interesting question that I have is this. If I see women almost exclusively shopping at Kohls, where do all of the men shop? Or are those women shopping for both?

Avoiding the Recession – Attitude is Everything

In case you haven’t noticed, most people have been suffering through a pretty severe recession over the past couple of years. Especially here in Phoenix, Arizona, where the housing bubble has hit us hard. To paint a picture, I read somewhere that over 30% of our economy was dependent upon the housing industry at the peak of the bubble. When that crashed, so did a lot of unrelated businesses that saw massive drops in customers once the demand for housing went away. Recently, we’ve also suffered through the current illegal immigration issue. While most of the country seems to be heading towards a recovery, in Arizona a lot of money has departed our state that was previously made and spent locally by illegal immigrants who are no longer here. Yes, the recession has been very real and very damaging to this city.

However, In these hard economic times, I have personally met and spoke with a lot of business associates who have done well for themselves. These companies have grown, and a few have been fortunate enough to experience incredible success. What sets these companies apart from the rest? I think the story is the same for all. These are the businesses that did not buy into the idea that the end of the world was about to come. They didn’t fire their marketing team and trim production staff. They didn’t start socking away all of their money for ‘hard times’. Quite the opposite. These are the businesses that took tremendous risk and, instead of burying their heads in the sand, started spending money. They spent money to hire new workers, they spent money on marketing, and they spent money to improve core operations.

I have a close friend who has several impressive marketing degrees. She repeatedly told me when the news of the recession first hit, and when things really started to turn down, that smart companies don’t stop marketing in hard times. Smart companies increase marketing. At the time I didn’t fully buy into that philosophy but now I have seen the truth of those comments first hand – someone hand that girl a medal! It doesn’t really make a lot of sense, does it, to spend money when the economy and the country is crumbling down all around you. But strangely enough it IS the best way – not just to survive, but to prosper.

Now, I’m not saying the solution is to run out and start spending without care, that’s foolish. You should always invest wisely and look for the most cost effective solutions to match your needs. However, the point is to remain optimistic, keep pushing forward, and keep expecting growth. When you adopt the attitude that you are going to be successful, recession or not, it’s easy to ignore what the media is telling you and instead begin focusing on ways you can thrive under existing circumstances.

Business can prosper under virtually any situation given the right attitude and mindset. This is a fact! While we are not yet out of this recession, if you are not as successful as you think you should be it could be time for you to examine your thinking. If your business has not been successful, why not? What could you be doing differently and, more importantly, how can you be thinking differently to make that change? Attitude is everything and companies that have adopted the attitude of defeat in the face of tough economic times will most certainly face it.

A Blur of Fantastic Events with Chaos Mixed In

Being a mom and a business owner in Phoenix, Arizona is usually a blur of fantastic events with a LOT of work and chaos mixed in. Although it can sometimes seem like there’s never an end to ‘problems that need to be solved’, it’s great to have the opportunity. In fact, it’s a good problem to have. To be alive in this great state (Arizona), raising an incredible family, and to have the challenges to solve and make a meaningful impact in the lives of others is a blessing.

This is by far best time of my life! It is rewarding when, as a professional woman, you finally figure out the secret blend of handling personal life, a husband, children, and family while also somehow holding down a successful career. There is a saying, “God doesn’t give us what we can’t handle.”. Sometimes it seems like God trusts me too much. :) But life is fruitful, and I am lucky to share my experience with great people, loving friends and family. Most importantly, it’s very nice to be your own boss, even if that means you have very little free time – it usually does.

Working from home? Get the right market data!

Several of my friends are work at home moms. I used to work at home myself, before our computer repair and web design businesses took off. What happened? How did we successfully propel our business past being a home based business to a successful company? It was all about collecting the right data about the current market and determining the needs of our customers.

Research, research, research! I offer that important advice to women currently working from home. What type of research are you doing for your industry? To be a success as a business owner you will need to know as many details as possible about:

  • Your competition
  • Industry pricing
  • Common traps to avoid
  • Customer needs

You cannot perfect your service offerings without these key details. Offering the right services at the right pricing at the right time is what makes a small business owner *now* a big business owner *later*. As a woman, you have the unique advantage of looking out for trends, fashions, and tastes of clients. Leverage your ability to provide exceptional customer service, based on common customer needs, as that will pay off later in the form of repeat business.
